Work At Present

 Raku crackle tester

Was going to use this glaze initially but when I tested in on the form, it seemed to white and almost domestic.

Decided to us this glaze because of the varied color and how it resembles an aged bone, which was exactly what I was looking for.

Fired this tester with seeds in the clay, but was to fragile and brittle.

  •  " highlights vernacular architecture in combination with nature to create multi-component topographies".
  •   "latest series of ceramic sculpture are a convergence of imagined forms and fabricated sequences".
  •  "Using slab-built terra cotta clay, Duke assembles partners bound together through tension and weight".
  •  "Her conceptual practice investigates physical structure, color and texture sought out in construction sites, agricultural buildings, bridges, and manufacturing complexes".

On first looking at this artist, Steve straight away come to mind. His work is quite similar in the sense of his use of the same clay body and how he built his current work as a "physical structure" and by assembling his bricks create a new form.

  •  The work explores wildlife’s relationship to contemporary ideas of landscape through ceramic sculpture and installation.
  •  This work is a continued exploration of ideas related to camouflage, including both natural
phenomena like crypsis and mimicry, and man-made versions such as camouflage used in
    warfare.
  •  My work explores the ability for camouflaged surfaces to transform our perception of
time, space and reality, addresses the idea of facade and the many ways we present ourselves.

I think Hubert would find this artist very appealing as he is constantly creating animals forms. I also feel as though he would like this aspect of camouflage aswel as Steve.

  •  continuing examination into how manipulation, physical force, spacial relationships, environment, gravity, and nature affect my work.
  •  ongoing exploration into the perception of ceramics as functional objects, coupled with the divergence of ideas of the traditional and contemporary aspects of clay.

I think Gillian's work is similar to Wu's and I believe that Gillian would really be interested in her forms. Also from reading Wu's statement I find that their ideas of mixing functional and contemporary aspects in each others work.

Exhibition Statement

I find beauty in the ordinary and natural forms within the landscape. My work is a visual exploration of the resilient fragility of nature. Through shape and form, my reference is to biological and environmental elements. I attempt to create a meaningful connection between the natural world and human interference, a visual response and exploration of the cruelty of killer whales in captivity.

Current Work

I have a huge interest in land art and i felt the need to place my pieces into the natural landscape. I felt that I needed to return the work back to the environment to which they originated.

Naomi J. Falk

"By weaving together memories, myths, and facts, I hope to provoke a subtly skewed awareness of
the ordinary, and to deepen an understanding of physical and psychological relationships to place".

"Recently working in multiples, I frequently use clay and found materials, and am drawn to their
histories".

"I consider how memories and emotions might translate into physical objects—the bone-like porcelain squeezed in my hands a physical demonstration of how we hold on to each other, the ways we remember".

"Through performance, sculpture, ceramics, and text, I explore the distance between physical and
psychological space".

I believe that Maeve would like Falk's work as she has played alot with fabric and ceramic,s yet in different ways. I also feel as though Zarah's interest in textiles would attract her to how Falks mixes the two mediums together.

William DePauw

"interested in the visual references embodied in physical form".

"investigates the broad range of associations in an objects visual presence".

"Employing various arrangement and presentation strategies with these objects, DePauw investigates the subjective content that resonates with particular relationships and various juxtapositions".

This artist and their ideas reminds of the way in which Roisin creates her work. Although they are no way similar in appearance i feel as though she also deals with multiples allot and always has a strong reason behind using juxtaposition and association of objects.

My current work

I find beauty in the ordinary and natural forms within the landscape.

My work is an attempt to create a meaningful connection between the natural world and human interference.

It is also a visual response and sincere exploration of the cruelty of killer whales in captivity.

Through my installation I want the viewer to feel unsettled by witnessing the harsh conditions these animals have been put through.

Alanna DeRocchi

Cape Buffalo on Terrain

Jackrabbit Jumping

alanna-derocchi-094

"my work, which is a visual response and sincere exploration of this distance and estrangement felt from the world around me"

"Through my installations I want the viewer to feel unsettled, but not through a visually deceptive illusion"

"The constructed displays are interpretations of natural history museum diorama staging and are meant to question the viewer's placement in their surroundings"

"sense to not forget the things encountered in life and a desire to be a part of and make memories of things in the natural world that are mysterious and unfamiliar"

Immediately on viewing DeRocchi's work Amy came to mind as her work deals with nature and partial animal forms. After reading the artists statement I think Lizzie could relate to her ideas behind her art as I believe that Lizzie's work tends to make the viewer feel unsettled at times. I also myself am interested in this artist as she deal with nature and how we can create work to record a memory from our past.

Lynn Duryea

"Through elemental shape and form, my reference is to architectural and mechanical elements as well as large scale industrial objects and sites."
"The objects are evocative of abandoned sites of human activity, generating feelings of
melancholy and stillness."
"traces of transformation that generate narratives of accretion and deterioration."
"I am interested in how structure as well as the methods of construction and assembly can become part of the visual language of an object."
I feel as though Steve would be interested in this artist by the way in which she creates her work and how her work is based on architectural and structural forms.

Shanna Fliegel

" I attempt to shape characters within the fantasy worlds that once
dictated our childhood thoughts"
"Absurdity and humor are themes that circulate
throughout situations I illustrate"
" I also question the disposition of contemporary society’s relationship
with animals, and am interested in ideas that surround humans’ need to
anthropomorphize them"

I think this work would be of interest to Amy, Emma King and Hubert because I see a similar theme of combining human and animal characteristics in Fliegel's work and their own. Also the way in which Emma and Hubert make their work is quite comparable.

Novie Trump

Escape

Waiting

The Broken Places Are Where The Light Shines Through

I believe that Maeve would really like this artist as I see a lot of her interests and similar themes of fragility within Trump's work. I also think that a lot of Trump's work would appeal to Danielle as a lot of her work deals with nature and juxtaposition .

"My work is a visual exploration of the resilient fragility of nature."
"to create modern reliquaries from clay."
"crafting intimate narratives that explore the cycles of  life in nature."

Ilena Finocchi

Untitled. Slipcast Translucent Porcelain, Lighting, Wood

Equilibrium Interrupted. Smoke fired & Terra Sig Earthenware

Untitled. Earthenware & found Archie Bray drying Board

I believe this artist would appeal to Emma King due her ideas of fantasy and how her ability to play comes out within in her work. Also i feel as though Zara would like Finocchi's work that involves the translucency of porcelain and how this work deals with the memories from her childhood.

"I build narratives through fantasy and play just as a child naturally would."
" metaphorical symbols which are personal reminders of my past."
" adventurous childhood and the unassuming confinements of adulthood."
"work explores metaphorical symbols which are personal reminders of my past."
